Del set the lantern down on a chest across from the bed. He got a candle and lit it from the lantern light. "You must be tired. Maybe you should get some rest."
The bed did look comfortable, with its green and yellow patchwork quilt and the fluffy pillows. Up here the walls were painted a soothing blue, and the two windows had curtains that fluttered in the breeze. Other than the bed and the table, there was a rocking chair and gold trimmed mirror on the wall opposite the windows.
"Where will you sleep?" she asked.
"There's only one bed, my lady. Where do you think?"
"With me? In the bed?" Kayla gasped. She'd never shared a bed before, especially not with a man.
"You don't trust me? I brought you here to protect you and I don't even know your name or where you're from." Del perched his hands on his hips. "Or maybe I should turn you back over to those satyrs who chased you."
"No, don't." Better not antagonize him. She'd had enough drama for one night. "I'm sorry, Del. My name is Kayla. I'm from the mansion about three miles from here. Sir Frederick and Lady Diane of Ashley Manor."
"Don't know them," Del said. "I try to stay away from those types. Why were you on the road at this time of night?"
"I wanted to go to town to the inn. I was looking for work. I might have to leave my employment."
"At night?"
This was getting ridiculous. He was skeptical, and rightfully so. Kayla sighed and sat on the edge of the bed. "I'm not being truthful, Del. I was running away because my uncle wants to marry me off to someone I've never met."
"Oh." His expression softened, and he dropped his arms to his sides. "So, your uncle is Sir Frederick, right?"
"Right," she said.
"Don't aristocrats arrange marriages all the time?"
"I suppose so. But I'm not an aristocrat. I'm the poor relation. Me and my mother."
He smiled as he covered her with the blanket. "You should know that I normally don't find beautiful young maidens in the forest after midnight either. Especially naked ones," he said. "You are a maiden, aren't you?"
It took a few seconds for her to catch his meaning, and when she did, heat spread across her face. Kayla pulled the blanket up so that it rested just below her chin. "Yes, I am."
A smiled spread across his full lips, completely disarming her. "Ah, then. I was right. It will be a very lucky gentleman who tastes you for the first time."
Now the heat was cutting a path downward, waking up a feeling in her center that she'd never experienced before. Was this some enchantment?
Del leaned closer and kissed her cheek. "You have a fire, my lady. Whoever wins your heart and ignites your passion will be at your mercy."
